Description

Unfamiliar Games is a teeny indie video game outlet creating zany, entertaining games. We're a three person team consisting of Nate Fowler, Alex Leich, and Andrew Leich. We're also capable of making press kits.

History

Early history

Unfamiliar, Inc. (Unfamiliar Games) was founded in 2018 by Andrew Leich and Alexander Leich when they decided to use the skills learned from years of modding games and creating content for the Second Life marketplace to make independent titles. They spent the majority of 2018 figuring out what the heck they were doing while designing a game they ultimately had to shelve (but maybe, one day, will bring back). Eventually they came to the conclusion they needed to cut their scope and make a smaller, more achievable, game.

Ma Deuce and Itch.io Game Off 2018

Realizing scope was their primary enemy, the Leich brothers entered Itch.io’s Game Off 2018 and produced Ma Deuce (MaD) -- an arcade-style shooter where you control a gunship helicopter to fend off waves of explosive drones. At the same time, Andrew met Nate at an IGDA meeting in Washington, D.C. and learned he was making a twin-stick shooter eerily similar to his own. In early 2019, Nate joined Unfamiliar Games and the team took the concepts from Ma Deuce and started experimenting on Dieselhawk.

Dieselhawk

Production on Dieselhawk began in earnest midway through 2019. The Unfamiliar Games team showed their first pre-alpha version of the game in September, 2019 at IGDA DC’s District Arcade where they netted 4th place. Spurred on by the success, development continued throughout the remainder of 2019 and into 2020. By late 2020, however, it was obvious the scope of this project was still too large for three people to finish in a reasonable time so the game was shelved.

Send It

The team decided we really needed a *small* project to work on and thus entered a period of experimentation. During this time, we hit upon the concept for Send It -- a simple yet absurd game about package delivery. At the end of 2020, we had a very rough prototype. Over the course of about 8 months the core mechanics were designed and implemented. In August 2021, Send It made its first public debut at Otakon after the team was selected to showcase there. The public demo of the game is now available and continues to be updated as work on the game continues.
